The JR Cleator Cup – the traditional season opener for the Ebac Northern League – will be held tomorrow (July 24).  The match features West Auckland and Hebburn Town.  The match will be held at West Auckland’s ground with a 3pm kick off.

Admission charges are £6/£4/£1 for adults/concessions/under 16s.

The fixture is usually between the champions of the first division and the winners of the League Cup.  However, due to the unique circumstances caused by the pandemic, this was not possible.

Hebburn won the Buildbase FA Vase earlier this summer and were leading the first division before the season was curtailed.  West Auckland was the last team to win the League Cup and won the Durham Challenge Cup.

League chairman Glenn Youngman said:

“Everyone is looking to the start of the new season.

“Even though many Covid restrictions have lifted, we would ask everyone to be considerate and mindful when they attend games and adhere to Government guidelines to make sure everyone stays safe and well.

“There will still be challenges ahead for the league and clubs as matches start to be played.  I thank everyone involved in our league for their continued hard work in the exceptional circumstances that we find ourselves in.

“Enjoy the football.”
