CUP DRAWS TO BE ANNOUNCED LATER TODAY

The League Management Committee last night decided to proceed with the Brooks Mileson League Cup and the Ernest Armstrong Cup.

At the beginning of the season the league announced that league fixtures would take priority in case of any disruptions due to covid.  However, good progress has been made with league fixtures, allowing the cup competitions to start.

The draw for the first two rounds of the cups will be announced at 3pm today.

There is a first/preliminary round of nine ties for the League Cup so that the next round is made up of 16 ties.  And there is a first/preliminary round of five ties for the EA Cup so the next round is made up of eight ties.

League chairman Glenn Youngman said:

“We wanted to make sure that good progress was made for league fixtures in case of major disruption caused by the pandemic and a long spell of bad weather.

“Most teams have now played more than half of their league fixtures so we that allows us to get our cup competitions up and running.

“However, we will keep the situation under review, should there be severe disruptions in the months ahead.”

The first/preliminary round of the League Cup will be held in the week preceding January 15 2022, with the second round in the week preceding February 19.

The first/preliminary round of the EA Cup will be held in the week preceding January 29 2022, with the second round in the week preceding February 26.

Ties will be played on the home club’s usual midweek night.

All 41 clubs play in the League Cup, while the EA Cup is for Second Division teams.  Both competitions are straight knock-outs, with penalty shoot-outs should ties be level after 90 minutes.

  • The committee also decided that the match between Ryhope CW and North Shields (which was abandoned due to floodlight failure) will be replayed on a date to be decided by the league.
