Newton Aycliffe were tonight crowned champions of the Ebac Northern League.

Their result at Northallerton tonight means that they have secured the First Division title.

League chairman Glenn Youngman said:

“Congratulations to Newton Aycliffe on winning the First Division.

“It’s a fantastic achievement.  The team has showed consistent quality throughout the season and are deserved champions.

“Their success is due to hard work and commitment both on and off the pitch, by the players, coaching staff  and also all the volunteers who play such an important role in keeping our clubs running.

“We’ll be sorry to see them leave the league but we wish them all the best as they gain promotion.”

Aycliffe manager Brian Atkinson said: “It’s a huge achievement by the players who have been magnificent all season.
“We’ve won the league playing quality, attractive football.
“I must give credit to everyone involved at the club.  From the players to the ground staff, from the coaching staff to the committee.  The chairman has been hugely supportive throughout, our volunteers have followed his lead and given the players and coaching staff all the support we could ask for and more.

“From the smallest job to the largest, this club and its people have risen to the task.  We are a team on and off the pitch.
“We look forward to promotion and the challenges that will bring, but for now the town has got a team it can be proud of.”

After discussion with both clubs, the trophy will be presented at Aycliffe’s game at Penrith on Saturday.
