Introducing: AFC Newbiggin & Durham United
The Northern League is set to welcome two new clubs for the 2025/26 campaign, as AFC Newbiggin and Durham United join the ranks following impressive performances in their respective leagues. Both clubs bring rich stories and unique journeys to the competition, further strengthening the diversity and tradition of one of the country’s oldest football leagues.
AFC Newbiggin: A Club on the Rise
AFC Newbiggin have enjoyed a remarkable journey since their formation in 2010. Born out of the collapse of Newbiggin Central Welfare, the club was created to keep the town’s footballing flame alive. They began life in the North Northumberland League before moving to the Northern Alliance, where they achieved promotion to the Premier Division within two seasons.
After a short return to the North Northumberland League, Newbiggin rejoined the Northern Alliance in 2019 and continued their climb. Their steady progress culminated in 2025 when they secured promotion to the Northern League after finishing second in the Alliance Premier Division.
The club has been based at Newbiggin Sports Centre since its inception, with significant upgrades made to the ground in 2023. Newbiggin kick off their Northern League campaign at home against CLS Park View on Saturday, 26th July, marking a new chapter in their footballing story.
Durham United: A New Chapter Begins in the Northern League
Durham United are back—and this time, they’re bringing a decade’s worth of momentum, community spirit, and silverware with them as they make their long-awaited return to the Northern League for the 2025/26 season.
From humble beginnings in 2012 as a school-based initiative formed by FA coaches Billy Horn and Mick Shead, Durham United have grown into one of County Durham’s most respected community football clubs. Originally named Durham Federation FC and aimed at giving young players from Sacriston and Ushaw Moor the chance to play football in a supportive environment, the club has evolved dramatically over the past decade.
Their ethos of “Football for All” has seen the club win County FA accolades, expand to 38 teams across all age groups and abilities, and firmly root itself in the heart of the local footballing community.
But it’s their recent senior team success that’s made headlines.
Under the stewardship of Adam Furness and Cameron Bhamra, and in partnership with Durham University Men’s Football Club, the men’s first team stormed the 2024/25 Wearside Premier Division—clinching the title in March with a commanding nine-point lead. They capped off an exceptional season with a memorable 5–2 victory over Durham Corinthians in the Alan Hood Charity Cup, securing a stunning league and cup double.
This triumph marks a symbolic three-year collaboration with the university and sets the stage for a new challenge as the club takes its place in the Northern League for the 2025/26 season.
For a club that began with after-school kickabouts and a vision for inclusivity, their rise is nothing short of inspiring. Now back in the Northern League, Durham United carry with them not just a trophy-laden season, but the backing of a community that’s grown with them every step of the way.
Durham United kick off their Northern League campaign on Saturday 26th July 2025 with a home clash against Boldon CA. The match will be held at Maiden Castle, The Graham Sports Centre, Stockton Road, Durham DH1 3SE, with kick-off at 3:00pm.
Durham United are ready. The Northern League awaits.
