Northern League News Interview – John Messenger – 24th July 2025

AFC Newbiggin Chairman John Messenger Shares Excitement Ahead of Northern League Debut

AFC Newbiggin are preparing for life in the Northern League following their hard-earned promotion — and chairman John Messenger says the club is “quietly confident” ahead of what promises to be an exciting new chapter.

Speaking ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, Messenger reflected on the club’s journey and the hard work that has gone into earning their place among the region’s top non-league sides.

“It was a great feeling once promotion was eventually confirmed,” said Messenger. “This was testament to all the hard work the players and staff have put in over the past couple of seasons building towards this.”

While aware of the step up in quality, Messenger believes Newbiggin are ready for the challenge ahead.

“We are really excited about the challenge and the opportunity to compete against a higher calibre of opposition,” he continued. “I would also say we’re quietly confident at this stage, but I’m sure the nerves will creep in as we draw closer to the opening game.

“We’ve played a good few teams in these leagues in friendlies and have also watched many games at this level, so we know the league has strong, talented sides. We’re determined to give it our best and can’t wait to get started.”

With a first season at Step 5 looming, survival is the number one goal — but the ambition doesn’t stop there.

“The main measure of success is obviously to stay in the division first time around. This is critical for the club’s growth and development,” said Messenger. “Hopefully we can do this relatively comfortably and avoid a relegation battle.

“Also showing that we belong at this level is important to us, so we need to produce strong performances and remain competitive throughout the whole season.”

When asked about standout players to watch this season, Messenger was quick to highlight the attacking threat and youthful energy in the squad.

“There’s our top goal scorer last season James Cooper, with his strong running and goal scoring. Then there’s our full backs Jack Livingstone and Jake Douglas who love to get forward and join the attacks,” he said.

But it’s in the middle of the park where Messenger believes the club’s unsung star operates.

“Harvey Hills is the one to watch for me,” he added. “He’s a young, combative midfielder who has been influential to our team’s success. He is definitely one to keep an eye on.”

With no one fixture circled on the calendar, Messenger is simply looking forward to embracing every step of the club’s new journey.

“Not any ground or team in particular — I’m personally looking forward to the entire season,” he said.

AFC Newbiggin’s Northern League debut marks a significant milestone in the club’s progress — and under the guidance of Messenger and his team, they’ll be aiming to prove they’re more than ready to belong.
